CLUB HISTORY
The club formed in 1969 as the Western Australian Institute of Technology,
with the likes of Norm Uren and Des Thornton.
The club is one of the oldest sporting clubs on campus and has developed solid foundations within the University.
In the late 70s the Club was renamed the WAIT Collegians “Black Pigs” reflecting the involvement of past students
from local private schools predominantly Aquinas, Wesley and Trinity Colleges.
In 1986 the renaming of WAIT to Curtin University saw the club itself undergo
a transformation into the Curtin “Goats”, to reflect the tenacious nature of its players
and teams in a RugbyWA competition dominated by well established “Premier” clubs.
Over the years the Curtin RUFC has gained substantial respect from the WA Rugby Community,
as a competitive club on the field whilst contributing to the development of Rugby in WA off the field.
As many of the older club members have gone on to the so called Gentleman like form of the game,
a natural bond has developed with the Irish Expats “Golden Oldies”, which has provided that lush green
pasture for retiring Goats to continue their love of the game.
In 2009 to celebrate the 40th year milestone the club held a black tie celebration dinner,
for all past and present playing and social members. The night also saw the announcement
of the “Greatest Of All Time” (GOAT) club players, recognising the number of games played
by all players throughout the past 5 decades.
